Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Solanum indicum (often referred to as Indian nightshade or "brihati" in Ayurveda) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South Asia. In Ayurvedic and folk medicine, various parts of the plant—such as the roots, leaves, and fruits—are used to manage symptoms following bites and stings from insects or small animals. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its reputed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to help alleviate pain, swelling, and the risk of infection associated with bites and stings.

However, scientific validation for these traditional claims is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Solanum indicum possess general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, there is a lack of robust, direct research demonstrating efficacy specifically for bites and stings in humans. There are also no clinical trials clearly establishing its benefit for this indication. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use for this purpose is largely traditional, with limited preclinical support, but insufficient scientific validation or clinical data to firmly endorse its efficacy for bites and stings.
