Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Shen-chu, also known as Shenqu (神麴), is a traditional Chinese medicinal ingredient made from fermented wheat flour and various herbs. Its primary historical use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is to aid digestion and improve the function of the spleen and stomach. In the context of bites and stings, Shen-chu is sometimes included in multi-herbal formulas within TCM, based on the traditional view that improving digestion and promoting the movement of Qi can help the body recover from external toxins, such as those introduced by insect bites or stings. There is no robust scientific evidence to directly support the effectiveness of Shen-chu for treating or supporting recovery from bites and stings. Its inclusion for such uses is largely grounded in traditional theory rather than clinical research. Some TCM texts or folk practices may recommend formulas containing Shen-chu as part of a broader approach to detoxification or symptom relief, but these uses have not been validated by modern pharmacological studies. Therefore, while Shen-chu's use for bites and stings is supported by tradition in some contexts, the overall strength of evidence for this indication is weak, and it is not a primary or widely recognized remedy for such conditions even within TCM.
