Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesbania, particularly Sesbania grandiflora, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and folk medicine, for treating bites and stings from insects and sometimes snakes. Traditional healers have applied Sesbania leaf paste or juice topically to affected areas, believing it helps reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. The rationale for its use may be attributed to its reported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which have been demonstrated in some laboratory studies on Sesbania extracts. However, while in vitro studies have shown possible bioactivity relevant to skin irritation and wound healing, there is little to no direct clinical or experimental evidence validating its effectiveness for bites and stings in humans. No well-controlled clinical trials exist to confirm its efficacy for this indication, and its use remains rooted in traditional practice rather than scientific validation. For serious bites or stings, especially from venomous animals, medical treatment should always be sought. The evidence rating reflects the lack of robust scientific studies directly supporting this traditional use, though some pharmacological properties of the plant may partially explain its historical application.
