Evidence supporting the use of: Prepared Aconite Tuber
For the health condition: Bites and Stings
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Prepared Aconite Tuber (commonly known as processed Aconitum or "Fu Zi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long-standing historical use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in China. It has been employed for various purposes, mainly for alleviating pain, combating cold syndromes, and reviving yang collapse. In some traditional texts and folk remedies, Aconite preparations were occasionally used externally for certain types of bites and stings, especially snakebites, due to their reputed ability to "dispel wind," "remove toxins," and relieve pain. However, these uses were based largely on empirical observations and traditional theories rather than systematic scientific evidence. There are no robust modern clinical studies or pharmacological analyses that validate the efficacy or safety of prepared aconite tuber specifically for treating bites and stings. Moreover, the use of Aconite is associated with significant toxicity risks—including cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity—if not properly processed and dosed. Modern medical practice does not endorse Aconite for bites and stings, and its use for these indications is not supported by contemporary scientific research. Therefore, while the use is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting its efficacy is minimal and largely anecdotal.
