Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fomes fomentarius, commonly known as the tinder fungus or hoof fungus, has a long history of traditional use, especially in European folk medicine and indigenous practices. Historical records and ethnobotanical literature describe its application as a topical dressing for wounds, including bites and stings. The fungus was prized for its absorbent, felt-like material, which could be prepared and placed on the skin to help draw out fluids and protect wounds from further contamination. Its use was primarily based on its physical properties rather than any inherent biochemical activity against toxins or venoms from bites or stings. However, there is scant scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Fomes fomentarius for treating bites and stings. Modern research has focused more on its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in vitro, but not specifically in the context of envenomation or inflammatory reactions from bites and stings. No clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have validated its traditional use for this purpose. Therefore, while its use is well-documented in traditional medicine, supporting evidence from a scientific standpoint remains minimal.
