Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, where it has been applied as a topical remedy for minor wounds, bites, and stings. Historical texts and folk medicine references describe the use of vervain poultices or infusions to soothe irritation and promote healing of the skin after insect bites or minor stings. The rationale behind this traditional use often centers on the plant’s purported anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties, as well as its use as a general vulnerary (wound-healing) herb.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of European Vervain specifically for bites and stings is minimal. While some laboratory studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Verbena officinalis extracts, these studies do not directly address its effects on insect bites or stings, nor do they provide clinical data supporting its use for these purposes. No controlled human trials have evaluated its effectiveness for this indication. Therefore, the use of European Vervain for bites and stings is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation.
