Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Eupatorium is a genus of flowering plants that includes species such as Eupatorium perfoliatum (commonly known as boneset) and Eupatorium purpureum (Joe-Pye weed). In traditional herbal medicine, especially among Native American groups and early North American settlers, some Eupatorium species were used for various ailments, including fever, flu, and occasionally external applications for bites, stings, and wounds. However, documentation specifically describing the use of Eupatorium for treating bites and stings is limited. Most references to its topical use are historical anecdotes or appear in compilations of herbal folklore rather than in detailed ethnobotanical or pharmacological records. There is little to no rigorous scientific research validating the effectiveness of Eupatorium species for bites and stings, and it is not a widely recognized or commonly recommended treatment in modern herbalism for this purpose. Thus, while a faint traditional basis exists, the evidence is weak and largely anecdotal.
