Western Mugwort (Artemisia ludoviciana) has traditionally been used by various Native American groups for a variety of medicinal purposes, including as a remedy for pain such as backache. Ethnobotanical records indicate that tribes such as the Blackfoot and the Lakota used poultices or infusions of mugwort applied externally or taken internally to alleviate muscle pain, soreness, or "lumbago." However, the documentation is primarily based on oral tradition and historical ethnobotanical surveys, rather than controlled scientific studies. There is a lack of rigorous clinical research confirming the efficacy or safety of Western Mugwort for back pain specifically. The plant contains volatile oils and other bioactive compounds common to the Artemisia genus, which may have mild anti-inflammatory or analgesic effects according to limited in vitro studies; nonetheless, these findings have not been directly linked to backache relief in humans. As such, the use of Western Mugwort for backache is best characterized as traditional, with scant scientific support and minimal evidence strength.
