Evidence supporting the use of: Sphaeranthus indicus
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sphaeranthus indicus, commonly known as East Indian globe thistle or "Mundi," has been utilized in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for a variety of ailments, including backache. Its use for musculoskeletal pain, such as backache, is primarily based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties described in classical Ayurvedic texts. Preparations made from its flowers, leaves, or whole plant are often administered orally or used externally (as poultices or oils) to relieve pain and swelling. However, while there are some preclinical studies suggesting that Sphaeranthus indicus possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects (e.g., animal models indicating reduction in pain and inflammation), there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for backache in humans. The available evidence supporting its use for this condition is mostly anecdotal or derived from traditional formulations rather than from controlled scientific studies. Therefore, while its traditional use is well-documented and some preliminary pharmacological data is promising, robust scientific validation for its efficacy in treating backache is currently insufficient. As a result, the overall evidence rating for its use in backache is moderate (2/5), primarily supported by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
