Essential oils have a long history of traditional use for relieving backache, particularly through topical application and massage. Popular essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary are often blended with carrier oils and massaged into the back to help alleviate discomfort. The rationale in folk and traditional medicine is that the oils possess muscle-relaxant, anti-inflammatory, or analgesic properties, and that massage itself can promote relaxation and reduce muscle tension.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of essential oils for backache is limited. Some small clinical studies have examined the effects of aromatherapy massage for nonspecific low back pain, suggesting mild benefit, but these studies often combine the effects of both the oil and the massage, making it difficult to attribute improvements solely to the essential oils themselves. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while aromatherapy massage may offer short-term relief for some people, the evidence is of low quality and more rigorous studies are needed.
