Dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogon japonicus), known in traditional Chinese medicine as "Mai Men Dong," has been used historically for a variety of conditions, primarily those related to the lungs, throat, and body fluids, such as cough, dry mouth, and constipation. Its use for backache, however, is not prominent in classical herbal texts. Some traditional formulations, especially in East Asian herbalism, include Dwarf lilyturf as a minor ingredient in complex formulas for general vitality or to support "yin" deficiencies, which can sometimes be associated with symptoms like lower back pain within the conceptual framework of traditional medicine. There is very limited direct traditional documentation specifically linking Dwarf lilyturf to backache relief, and such uses are usually indirect, based on its broader role in nourishing body fluids and supporting renal ("kidney") function as interpreted in traditional contexts. Scientifically, there are no clinical studies or pharmacological data supporting its efficacy for back pain. Therefore, while there is some tradition-based rationale—albeit weak and indirect—for its use in supporting conditions loosely associated with backache, there is no robust traditional or scientific evidence specifically justifying its use for this purpose.
