Chamomile has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including musculoskeletal discomforts such as backache. Traditional herbalists have used chamomile as a topical application (in the form of poultices, ointments, or compresses) and as a tea to help reduce muscle tension and spasms, which can contribute to back pain. The rationale is based on chamomile’s well-documented mild anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming effects, primarily attributed to compounds such as apigenin and bisabolol. However, while there is scientific evidence supporting chamomile’s efficacy for general pain relief, inflammation, and muscle relaxation in vitro and in animal studies, there is little to no direct clinical research investigating its effectiveness specifically for backache in humans. Consequently, its use for backache is based more on tradition and extrapolation from its general properties rather than robust clinical data. Most modern medical guidelines do not mention chamomile as a treatment for backache. Therefore, while chamomile’s traditional use for backache can be acknowledged, the strength of evidence supporting its efficacy for this particular condition is very limited.
