Aster root (Aster tataricus), also known as purple aster or Ziwan in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long-standing history of use primarily as an expectorant and for respiratory issues. However, in some traditional medicine systems, including TCM and certain folk remedies, it is occasionally mentioned in multi-herb formulas for musculoskeletal complaints such as backache. The rationale for its use in these cases is generally based on the idea that it can help remove "wind-dampness" or promote circulation, both considered possible contributors to pain in TCM theory. There is, however, little documentation of aster root being used specifically as a standalone remedy for backache, and its inclusion in formulas for this purpose is less common compared to its primary respiratory uses.

From a scientific perspective, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of aster root for backache. Most studies on aster root have focused on its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, but these are largely in vitro or animal studies and do not directly address musculoskeletal pain or backache in humans. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for its use within multi-herb preparations for backache, the strength of evidence is very weak and not validated by modern research. Therefore, the use of aster root for backache is justified primarily on traditional grounds, with minimal supporting evidence.
