Evidence supporting the use of: Artemisia
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Artemisia, a genus of plants that includes species such as Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) and Artemisia absinthium (wormwood), has a long history in traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments, including backache. In traditional Chinese medicine and various folk practices in Europe and Asia, Artemisia is often applied topically or used in herbal preparations intended to alleviate muscle and joint pain, which may include backache. The rationale behind its use is attributed to its purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as described in classic herbal texts and ethnobotanical surveys. For example, mugwort is sometimes used as a component of moxibustion, a traditional therapy in which dried Artemisia is burned near the skin at acupuncture points to relieve pain.
However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of Artemisia for backache is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that certain Artemisia extracts possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, but these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical trials targeting back pain in humans. Therefore, the use of Artemisia for backache is primarily justified by tradition, and while there is some biological plausibility given its general anti-inflammatory activity, direct scientific validation for backache relief is lacking.
