Zinc, particularly in the form of zinc undecylenate or zinc oxide, has a documented history of use in the treatment of Athlete’s Foot (tinea pedis). The scientific rationale is based on the antifungal properties of certain zinc salts. Zinc undecylenate, in particular, is an active ingredient in several over-the-counter antifungal powders and creams. Clinical studies and in vitro research have demonstrated that zinc compounds can inhibit the growth of dermatophytes, the fungi responsible for Athlete’s Foot. For example, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (1982) showed that topical zinc undecylenate was effective in reducing fungal infection and symptoms in a significant portion of patients. Another study found that combining zinc with undecylenic acid enhanced antifungal activity compared to either agent alone. However, while these results are promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is limited compared to standard antifungal drugs like terbinafine or clotrimazole. Most studies are older, small-scale, or lack rigorous design. Modern guidelines generally recommend other agents as first-line therapy, but zinc-based treatments remain available and can be effective, especially for mild cases or as adjunctive care. In summary, zinc’s use in Athlete’s Foot has scientific support, though the strength of evidence is moderate at best, which is reflected in the rating given.
