Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) extract, particularly the patented form known as Pycnogenol, has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing asthma. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically help reduce airway inflammation associated with asthma.

Several small, randomized controlled trials have explored Pycnogenol's effects in asthma patients, especially children. For instance, a 2004 study published in Journal of Asthma found that children taking Pycnogenol for several months exhibited improved asthma symptoms and reduced need for rescue inhaler medication compared to placebo. Another study from 2002 in Life Sciences reported similar findings, with improvements in lung function and decreased leukotriene levels, which are inflammatory mediators implicated in asthma.

However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes and sometimes lack of rigorous blinding or long-term follow-up. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses note that, while results are promising, the evidence base is not robust enough to recommend maritime pine extract as a standard asthma therapy. Major asthma guidelines do not currently endorse its use. In summary, there is preliminary scientific evidence for a modest benefit, but large-scale, high-quality trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in asthma management.
