Clerodendrum indicum (commonly known as "tubu" or "Turk's Turban") has been traditionally used in various Asian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and folk medicine, to support respiratory ailments such as asthma. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that the roots, leaves, and sometimes the flowers of this plant have been utilized as decoctions or powders to alleviate symptoms like cough, wheezing, and bronchial congestion. The rationale for its use is based largely on its reported expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory effects as observed in traditional practice.

Some preliminary pharmacological studies have provided limited support for these traditional uses. For example, extracts of Clerodendrum indicum have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic effects in animal models, which may contribute to the relief of asthmatic symptoms. Certain phytochemicals such as flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids present in the plant are thought to mediate these effects. However, these studies are generally small in scale, not conducted in humans, or lack robust methodological quality.
