Evidence supporting the use of: Apigenin
For the health condition: Asthma
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Apigenin is a natural flavonoid found in various fruits and vegetables, most notably in parsley, celery, and chamomile. Its potential use in asthma is based primarily on preclinical scientific research rather than traditional use or established clinical guidelines. Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that apigenin possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, both of which are relevant to the pathophysiology of asthma. For example, studies in mice have shown that apigenin can inhibit airway inflammation, reduce eosinophil infiltration, and decrease the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, which are commonly elevated in asthma.
Additionally, apigenin has been shown to inhibit the activation of NF-κB and other signaling pathways implicated in allergic airway inflammation. However, despite these promising findings, there is a lack of robust human clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of apigenin specifically for asthma management. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence from animal models and cell culture studies supporting the potential benefit of apigenin in asthma, this has not yet translated into clinical practice or widespread recommendation. More rigorous human studies are needed to establish its therapeutic value and safety profile in asthma patients.
