Zinc is scientifically recognized for its role in appetite regulation, particularly in cases of zinc deficiency. Several clinical studies have indicated that zinc deficiency can lead to anorexia (loss of appetite), and supplementation can help restore normal appetite, especially in children and individuals with documented low zinc status. The mechanism involves zinc’s role as a cofactor for numerous enzymes and its influence on neurotransmitters and hormones (such as ghrelin) that regulate hunger and satiety. For example, a systematic review published in Appetite (2013) reported that zinc supplementation improved appetite in malnourished children. Similarly, studies in adults with chronic illnesses (e.g., patients with dialysis or HIV/AIDS) have shown improvement in appetite scores following zinc supplementation.
However, in individuals with normal zinc levels, evidence supporting zinc supplementation as a general appetite stimulant is limited. Most benefits are observed in populations with marginal or overt zinc deficiency.
