Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including neurotransmission, immune function, and antioxidant defense. There is emerging scientific interest in the potential role of zinc in the regulation of mood and anxiety. Several observational studies have found that individuals with anxiety disorders may have lower serum zinc levels compared to healthy controls. Moreover, animal studies suggest that zinc deficiency can induce behaviors analogous to anxiety and depression, likely due to its involvement in modulating the function of neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate.
A small number of human studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the effects of zinc supplementation on anxiety. Some of these studies report modest improvements in anxiety symptoms, especially when zinc is used alongside other nutrients or medications. However, the evidence is not robust: sample sizes are generally small, and there is a lack of large, well-controlled trials specifically targeting individuals with anxiety disorders. Additionally, improvement in anxiety symptoms may be more pronounced in people who are zinc deficient at baseline.
In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of zinc in the management of anxiety, the current body of evidence is limited and not definitive. Zinc supplementation may be considered as an adjunct in individuals with confirmed deficiency, but it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders without further supporting research.
