Evidence supporting the use of: Phellodendron amurense
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phellodendron amurense, commonly known as Amur cork tree, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is often combined with other herbs, such as Magnolia officinalis, in formulas designed to "calm the spirit" and reduce stress or anxiety symptoms. The most well-known formula containing Phellodendron is called "Relora" (a proprietary blend of Phellodendron and Magnolia extracts), which is marketed for stress and anxiety relief.
The evidence supporting Phellodendron’s use for anxiety is largely traditional and anecdotal. Historical texts suggest its use to clear "heat" and dampness from the body, which in TCM theory can manifest as emotional disturbances, including anxiety. Modern human studies on Phellodendron alone for anxiety are lacking; most available research focuses on the Relora blend. These small clinical trials suggest some potential for reducing stress and cortisol levels, but the evidence is preliminary, and it is not possible to attribute effects specifically to Phellodendron without further research.
In summary, the use of Phellodendron amurense for anxiety is primarily supported by traditional usage in TCM. Scientific validation is limited, with a lack of robust clinical trials examining its isolated effects on anxiety. More rigorous studies are needed to evaluate its efficacy and safety for this indication.
