Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been traditionally consumed for its calming properties, but modern research has also explored its potential role in supporting anxiety management. The primary scientific rationale centers around L-theanine, an amino acid present in green tea leaves. L-theanine has demonstrated anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects in several clinical and preclinical studies. It is believed to modulate neurotransmitter levels (such as GABA, dopamine, and serotonin) and increase alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state.

Randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with L-theanine can reduce subjective stress and anxiety in both healthy individuals and those under acute stress. For example, a 2019 systematic review in the journal Nutrients concluded that L-theanine, particularly in doses of 200-400 mg, may reduce stress and anxiety in people exposed to stressful conditions. While the amount of L-theanine in a typical cup of green tea (about 25-60 mg) is less than these supplemental doses, habitual consumption may nevertheless contribute to overall calming effects.

It is important to note that green tea also contains caffeine, which may counteract some of its calming effects, especially in sensitive individuals. Overall, while the evidence is not overwhelmingly strong, there is a moderate scientific basis for the use of green tea, and especially its L-theanine component, in supporting anxiety reduction.
