Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Kefir, a fermented milk drink rich in probiotics, is scientifically investigated for its ability to support gut health, especially during and after antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of gut microbiota, leading to side effects like diarrhea and increased susceptibility to infections such as Clostridioides difficile. Kefir contains a diverse population of beneficial bacteria and yeasts, which may help restore the gut microbiome disrupted by antibiotics. Several clinical studies and reviews have examined the use of probiotic-rich foods, including kefir, in reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that kefir supplementation in hospitalized patients receiving antibiotics reduced the incidence of AAD compared to controls. However, most studies use mixed probiotics or yogurt, and fewer human trials focus exclusively on kefir. There is also evidence suggesting kefir's constituent microbes can inhibit pathogenic bacteria in vitro, and animal studies show restoration of gut flora after antibiotic use. While kefir is not an antibiotic alternative, it is used as a supportive measure to mitigate side effects of antibiotics. Thus, while tradition supports its consumption, there is also moderate scientific evidence (especially from small human trials and mechanistic studies) to justify its use for supporting gut health during antibiotic therapy.
