Coconut, particularly in the form of coconut oil, has been explored as an alternative or adjunct to antibiotics due to its antimicrobial properties. The primary active component responsible for these effects is lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that can be converted in the body to monolaurin, a compound with demonstrated antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties in laboratory settings. Several in vitro studies have shown that coconut oil and its components are effective against a range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, most of the evidence is preclinical; human clinical trials are limited and have generally focused on topical rather than systemic use. There is some evidence supporting its use in oral health (such as oil pulling) to reduce bacterial load in the mouth, but robust clinical data on its use as a systemic antibiotic alternative are lacking. Therefore, while there is scientific interest and some laboratory evidence supporting coconut’s antimicrobial actions, the clinical evidence is not strong enough to recommend it as a replacement for conventional antibiotics.
