Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous biological processes, including immune function, DNA synthesis, and cell division. Its use in relation to anemia stems from its role in erythropoiesis (the production of red blood cells) and its interaction with other micronutrients, particularly iron. Scientific studies have shown that zinc deficiency can contribute to anemia, especially in populations where malnutrition is prevalent. This is because zinc is necessary for the activity of enzymes involved in heme synthesis—a critical component of hemoglobin in red blood cells.
