Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Green tea has been explored as a potential supportive agent for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) primarily due to its rich content of polyphenolic compounds, especially epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Laboratory and animal studies have shown that EGCG exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. These mechanisms are relevant because oxidative stress and inflammation are thought to contribute to Alzheimer’s pathology, and EGCG may also inhibit the aggregation of amyloid-beta plaques, a hallmark of AD. Furthermore, some in vitro studies suggest that green tea polyphenols can modulate cell signaling pathways involved in neuronal survival and plasticity.

However, despite these promising preclinical findings, clinical evidence in humans is limited and not yet conclusive. A few small clinical trials and observational studies have reported associations between green tea consumption and a reduced risk or slower cognitive decline in elderly populations. For instance, some population-based studies in Asia have suggested a correlation between higher green tea intake and better cognitive performance. Yet, these studies are observational and cannot prove causality. Randomized controlled trials specifically investigating green tea or EGCG supplementation in Alzheimer's patients are scarce, and results so far have been inconclusive or have only shown modest effects.

Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for the use of green tea in supporting brain health and possibly influencing Alzheimer’s risk, the strength of human clinical data is low. More robust trials are needed before green tea can be recommended as a treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease.
