Evidence supporting the use of: Green tea
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been investigated for its potential to support or treat respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The scientific interest stems from its rich content of polyphenolic compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that EGCG can inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells and suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in allergic responses. For example, research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2002) showed that green tea polyphenols inhibited IgE-mediated allergic reactions in mice and reduced the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. However, human clinical evidence remains limited. Small pilot studies and some randomized controlled trials have suggested mild benefits in reducing nasal symptoms or airway inflammation, but results are inconsistent and often involve small sample sizes or short durations. Green tea is not a standard therapy for allergies, and its effects are generally modest compared to conventional antihistamines or corticosteroids. Traditionally, green tea has not been specifically used as an anti-allergy remedy in herbal medicine systems, but its general health-promoting properties have contributed to its popularity. Overall, while preclinical data are promising, current scientific evidence for green tea’s effectiveness in treating respiratory allergies in humans is weak to moderate, justifying a cautious rating of 2 out of 5.
