Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bupleurum falcatum has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and East Asian medicine, where it is commonly included in herbal formulas to address a range of respiratory conditions, including allergic rhinitis and other allergy-related symptoms. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), bupleurum is believed to "disperse wind-heat" and harmonize the body's internal environment, which, in TCM theory, can help reduce symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and congestion associated with allergies. Its use in classic formulas such as Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) demonstrates its historical relevance for respiratory and immune support.

However, while there is robust traditional use, direct scientific evidence specifically supporting bupleurum falcatum for treating or preventing respiratory allergies is limited. A few preclinical studies suggest that some compounds in bupleurum (notably saikosaponins) may exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which could theoretically benefit allergy sufferers. Nonetheless, clinical trials in humans focusing specifically on allergic rhinitis or other respiratory allergies are lacking. Therefore, bupleurum’s use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supportive evidence from pharmacological studies and little from controlled clinical trials.
