Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous biological processes, including DNA synthesis, immune function, and antioxidant defense. Its relevance to aging stems from its role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and supporting immune health, both of which are implicated in the aging process. Scientific studies suggest that zinc deficiency is more common in older adults and is associated with impaired immune responses, increased inflammation, and greater susceptibility to infections and age-related diseases. Some research indicates that adequate zinc intake may help maintain immune function and reduce the incidence of infections in the elderly, potentially contributing to healthier aging.
However, while zinc is critical for overall health and deficiency should be corrected, there is limited direct evidence that zinc supplementation prevents aging or significantly slows age-related decline in healthy, well-nourished individuals. Clinical trials have shown benefits in zinc-deficient populations, but the effects in those with adequate zinc status are less clear. High doses of zinc can also cause adverse effects, including interference with copper absorption and gastrointestinal symptoms.
