The use of vitamin C for age spots is scientifically justified, as it is supported by several studies, although the evidence is moderate rather than conclusive.
Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is essential for melanin production in the skin. Excess melanin leads to hyperpigmented spots, such as age spots. Topical vitamin C has been shown in multiple clinical and in vitro studies to help lighten hyperpigmentation and improve overall skin brightness. For example, a review published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (2017) concluded that topical vitamin C is effective in reducing melanin formation and can help treat pigmentary disorders, including age spots.
While oral vitamin C does not appear to have a direct effect on age spots, topical formulations (such as serums containing L-ascorbic acid) are widely used and have shown benefit, especially when combined with other skin-brightening ingredients. The degree of improvement varies and is often mild to moderate, but consistent use over several weeks to months can lead to visible changes.
