Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin C
For the body system: Adrenal Medulla
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is present in very high concentrations in the adrenal glands, particularly the adrenal cortex and medulla. The adrenal medulla is responsible for producing catecholamines such as adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), which are crucial for the body’s stress response. Scientific studies have shown that vitamin C is utilized in the biosynthesis of catecholamines, specifically facilitating the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine via the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase, which is vitamin C-dependent. Animal studies and limited human research suggest that the adrenal glands utilize and deplete vitamin C rapidly during stress, indicating a possible increased requirement during periods of physiological stress. However, while there is clear biochemical evidence of vitamin C involvement in catecholamine synthesis, robust clinical evidence that supplemental vitamin C improves adrenal medulla function or stress resilience in healthy humans is lacking. Most of the evidence comes from laboratory or animal studies, or from indirect observations of vitamin C depletion during stress. Therefore, while the use of vitamin C to support adrenal function is scientifically plausible, direct evidence for clinical benefit in supporting the adrenal medulla specifically is limited.
