Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Relora® is a proprietary blend typically containing extracts from Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense. It is promoted for stress management and supporting adrenal gland function, largely due to its purported effects on cortisol levels and perceived stress. The scientific evidence supporting its use for the adrenal glands is limited but present. Small clinical trials have indicated that Relora® may help reduce self-reported stress and moderate cortisol levels, which are hormones produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. For example, a 2006 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that Relora® supplementation reduced salivary cortisol and improved mood states in moderately stressed individuals. Other studies have shown similar reductions in perceived stress and anxiety. However, these studies tend to be small (typically fewer than 100 participants), of short duration, and often funded by industry sponsors.

Historically, the individual herbs in Relora® have been used in traditional Chinese medicine, but not specifically for adrenal support. The rationale for its use in supporting the "adrenal system" is primarily based on its influence on stress hormones rather than direct effects on adrenal gland health or disease. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for claims that Relora® affects cortisol and stress, the strength and quantity of evidence are modest, justifying a low-to-moderate rating.
