Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Relora® is a proprietary blend of extracts from Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense, traditionally used in Chinese medicine. Its use to support the adrenal cortex body system is primarily based on its purported ability to modulate stress and cortisol levels. Several small clinical trials and animal studies have investigated Relora® for stress reduction, anxiety, and cortisol modulation. For example, a 2006 double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that Relora® significantly reduced salivary cortisol and improved mood states in moderately stressed subjects (J Int Soc Sports Nutr, 2006). Another study in 2013 observed a decrease in perceived stress and improvements in certain mood parameters among overweight premenopausal women (J Altern Complement Med, 2013). These outcomes suggest a potential benefit in supporting the stress response, which is regulated in part by the adrenal cortex via cortisol production. However, the direct impact of Relora® on adrenal cortex function specifically has not been robustly studied, and most clinical data focus on subjective stress and anxiety rather than objective adrenal biomarkers. Overall, while there is some scientific evidence to support its use for stress-related parameters, the direct evidence for supporting adrenal cortex health is limited and the quality of studies is moderate. Therefore, it merits a rating of 2 out of 5 for scientific support in this context.
