Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Huang Bai." It is traditionally used to clear heat and dampness, and is included in formulas for conditions such as inflammation, infections, and certain metabolic imbalances. In TCM, the concept of supporting the adrenal cortex does not directly map onto traditional uses, but Phellodendron is sometimes included in adaptogenic or stress-supporting herbal blends in modern integrative health practices, based on its perceived anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

However, there is minimal direct scientific evidence linking Phellodendron amurense to specific support of the adrenal cortex or adrenal function. Most research on Phellodendron focuses on its alkaloids (such as berberine) and their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, or metabolic effects. There are no high-quality clinical trials or robust preclinical studies that confirm its efficacy for adrenal cortex support or for modulating adrenal hormones like cortisol. Therefore, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by traditional herbal practices rather than scientific validation.
