Radish (Raphanus sativus) has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and European folk medicine, for supporting digestion and relieving symptoms associated with acid indigestion or dyspepsia. Traditionally, radish is believed to stimulate bile flow and gastric secretions, which may help promote digestion and ease symptoms such as bloating, fullness, and mild dyspepsia. In TCM, radish seeds (Lai Fu Zi) are specifically used to "reduce food stagnation" and "descend rebellious Qi," which is often interpreted as countering symptoms like belching and acid reflux.

Scientific validation of radish for acid indigestion is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that radish extracts may have choleretic effects (stimulate bile production) and possibly support gastric motility, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The root contains compounds like glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which may have mild digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. However, these effects have not been specifically linked to relief of acid indigestion in controlled human studies.

Overall, while there is a strong traditional basis for using radish to support digestion and relieve symptoms of acid indigestion, the scientific evidence is weak, and the efficacy remains largely anecdotal. Therefore, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition rather than modern clinical validation.
