Mineral water is used to support or treat acid indigestion, and there is some scientific evidence behind its use, though the quality and quantity of studies are limited. Mineral water, especially those rich in bicarbonate ions, may help neutralize stomach acid due to their alkaline nature. Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of bicarbonate-rich mineral waters on dyspeptic symptoms and acid balance. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2002) found that bicarbonate-rich mineral water improved symptoms of dyspepsia and reduced heartburn compared to tap water. Another study in the Journal of Nutritional Medicine (1995) reported similar benefits, suggesting that the buffering capacity of bicarbonate in mineral water can be mildly effective in alleviating acid indigestion.

However, not all mineral waters are the same; the benefit appears to be limited to those containing significant bicarbonate or alkaline minerals. The overall evidence base is modest, with few large, high-quality trials. Most recommendations for mineral water as a remedy for acid indigestion are based on these small studies and on the physiological rationale that alkaline fluids can help buffer stomach acid. There is not yet strong, comprehensive clinical data to firmly establish its efficacy, but available evidence does provide some scientific support for its use.
