Milk has been traditionally used to relieve symptoms of acid indigestion and heartburn, primarily due to its perceived soothing and neutralizing effects on stomach acid. Historically, both medical professionals and laypeople recommended drinking milk for quick relief from gastric discomfort. Milk contains calcium, which can temporarily neutralize stomach acid and provide a short-lived soothing sensation. However, scientific studies have shown that while milk may buffer gastric acid initially, its protein and fat content can stimulate the stomach to produce more acid after a brief period. This rebound acid secretion can potentially worsen symptoms in the long term. Thus, while the recommendation has deep roots in tradition and was once common in medical practice, especially before the advent of modern antacids and proton pump inhibitors, contemporary evidence does not robustly support the efficacy of milk as a treatment for acid indigestion. Current clinical guidelines no longer endorse milk as a remedy for acid reflux or indigestion, and it is now generally considered a traditional, rather than scientifically validated, approach. Individuals who experience relief after drinking milk may be experiencing a placebo effect, or only a temporary reduction in symptoms. For persistent or severe acid indigestion, medical advice and evidence-based treatments are recommended over traditional home remedies like milk.
