Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus (unspepcified)
For the health condition: Acid Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus species, as a group of probiotic bacteria, have a long history of use in fermented foods and traditional remedies aimed at supporting digestive health, including symptoms often associated with acid indigestion (such as bloating, discomfort, and mild dyspepsia). Traditional medicine systems and folk practices have recommended probiotic-rich foods (like yogurt and cultured milk) for stomach upset and general digestive support. The rationale is that beneficial bacteria help restore balance to the gut flora, which may be disrupted and associated with digestive discomfort.
However, scientific studies specifically addressing the use of Lactobacillus species for "acid indigestion" (heartburn or dyspepsia) are limited and results are mixed. Most clinical evidence focuses on probiotics’ roles in other gastrointestinal conditions such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and Helicobacter pylori infection. There is some preliminary evidence suggesting probiotics, including Lactobacillus, may improve mild dyspepsia or general GI symptoms, but robust, consistent evidence for their efficacy in treating classic acid indigestion is lacking. Thus, while their use is supported primarily by tradition and historical dietary practices, scientific validation for this specific indication is weak.
