Lactobacillus fermentum is a probiotic bacterium found in fermented foods and the human gastrointestinal tract. Its use for supporting or treating acid indigestion (also known as dyspepsia or heartburn) has some scientific basis, though the evidence is still emerging and not definitive. Several small-scale clinical studies and animal models suggest that certain probiotic strains, including L. fermentum, may contribute to gastrointestinal comfort by modulating gut microbiota, enhancing mucosal barrier function, and reducing inflammation. These mechanisms could theoretically help alleviate symptoms of acid indigestion, such as bloating, discomfort, and mild reflux.
However, the direct evidence specifically linking L. fermentum—as opposed to other Lactobacillus species—to significant improvements in acid indigestion is limited. Most human trials have tested mixed probiotic formulations rather than L. fermentum alone. Some studies indicate that L. fermentum can survive stomach acidity and may help balance gastric pH or inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria that contribute to dyspepsia. A 2016 review in Beneficial Microbes cited modest evidence for select probiotic strains in reducing functional dyspepsia symptoms, but did not single out L. fermentum as especially effective.
