Indian bael (Aegle marmelos), also known as Bengal quince or wood apple, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for treating digestive issues such as acid indigestion, dyspepsia, and diarrhea. The fruit pulp, leaves, and roots are used in various formulations to soothe the digestive tract, reduce acidity, and promote gastric health. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe bael as having "deepana" (appetizer) and "pachana" (digestive) properties, often recommending it for calming pitta-related disorders, which include excess stomach acid and indigestion.

Scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited but suggestive. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of bael may possess gastroprotective and anti-ulcer properties, potentially by reducing gastric acid secretion and enhancing mucosal defense, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The majority of available evidence is anecdotal or based on centuries of traditional use rather than rigorous modern research. Thus, its use for acid indigestion is justified primarily by tradition, with some preliminary scientific support but insufficient high-quality human studies to rate it higher on the evidence scale.
