Grass-leaved calamus (Acorus gramineus) has a history of traditional use in various Asian medicinal systems, particularly in Chinese and Japanese folk medicine, as a remedy for digestive complaints including acid indigestion (dyspepsia). The rhizome has been employed as a carminative and stomachic, believed to soothe the stomach, reduce bloating, and alleviate discomfort related to acid reflux and indigestion. Traditional texts sometimes recommend it in formulations for gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the body of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for acid indigestion is limited. There are very few, if any, human clinical trials rigorously assessing its effectiveness for this specific indication. Most of the available data come from historical pharmacopoeias and anecdotal reports rather than systematic research. Some in vitro and animal studies on related Acorus species (such as Acorus calamus) suggest possible gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to Acorus gramineus or to human use without further study. In summary, the use of Grass-leaved calamus for acid indigestion is primarily justified by tradition, with only limited scientific investigation into its efficacy or safety for this purpose.
