Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum) has traditionally been used in various cultures to aid digestion and manage symptoms of acid indigestion or dyspepsia. The active compound in cayenne, capsaicin, is believed to stimulate gastric secretions and enhance digestive function. In traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, cayenne is thought to "warm" the digestive tract, increase circulation, and promote the movement of digestive juices, which may help alleviate feelings of fullness or discomfort after eating. However, scientific evidence supporting the use of cayenne pepper specifically for acid indigestion is limited and somewhat conflicting. Some small studies suggest that capsaicin may reduce dyspeptic symptoms by influencing gastric motility and desensitizing the stomach lining over time. There is also evidence that repeated exposure to capsaicin can decrease the sensation of pain and burning in the stomach. Conversely, other research indicates that spicy foods, including cayenne, can initially worsen symptoms like heartburn, especially in people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Overall, while there is a strong tradition of using cayenne pepper for digestive complaints, scientific validation is weak and mostly theoretical or based on small, short-term studies. Individuals with acid indigestion should exercise caution, as responses to cayenne can vary widely, and it may aggravate symptoms in some people.
