Bifidobacterium longum is a probiotic species commonly found in the human gut and in many probiotic supplements. Its use to support or treat acid indigestion (dyspepsia) is based on emerging scientific evidence, though this evidence is still preliminary and not robust. Some small clinical studies and animal models suggest that B. longum may help regulate gastrointestinal function, modulate gut microbiota composition, and improve symptoms related to gastrointestinal discomfort, including bloating and mild acid-related problems. The proposed mechanisms include competition with pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of mucosal barrier function, and modulation of local inflammation. These actions could theoretically help to reduce symptoms of acid indigestion, particularly when dyspepsia is associated with imbalances in gut flora or low-grade inflammation. A few human trials have reported modest improvements in subjective symptoms of indigestion (such as abdominal discomfort and bloating) when participants took B. longum-containing probiotic supplements compared to placebo. However, these studies are often small, heterogeneous in terms of probiotic strains and dosages, and sometimes combine multiple strains, making it difficult to ascribe effects specifically to B. longum. Overall, while there is some early scientific support for the use of B. longum for acid indigestion, the evidence is not yet strong or conclusive. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and clarify mechanisms. Its use is not primarily based on traditional medicine, but rather on recent research into gut microbiota and gastrointestinal health.
