Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Liverleaf (Hepatica americana), also known as liverwort, has a history of use in North American traditional herbal medicine, particularly by early European settlers and herbalists. The plant was so named due to the supposed resemblance of its leaves to the human liver, which led to its inclusion in treatments for liver ailments and digestive complaints, including acid indigestion, based on the "Doctrine of Signatures." Traditional usage involved making teas or tinctures from the leaves to relieve symptoms such as heartburn, dyspepsia, and other digestive discomforts. However, there is a lack of robust clinical studies or scientific validation supporting its efficacy for acid indigestion. Most current herbal references do not list American Liverleaf as a significant remedy for this condition, and its use has largely fallen out of favor in modern herbalism. Safety data are also limited. Thus, while historical and traditional records indicate occasional use for acid indigestion, the supporting evidence is anecdotal and not scientifically substantiated.
