Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe vera
For the health condition: Acid Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aloe vera has a long history of traditional use for digestive complaints, including acid indigestion (also known as dyspepsia or heartburn). In traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, aloe vera juice or gel has been used to soothe the digestive tract, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. The mucilaginous gel from the inner leaf is thought to form a protective coating in the stomach and esophagus, thus reducing irritation from stomach acids.
There is limited scientific evidence to support these traditional claims. A few small clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that aloe vera may help reduce symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid indigestion, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory and mucosal healing properties. For example, a 2015 pilot study published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that aloe vera syrup reduced the frequency of heartburn, regurgitation, and nausea in patients with GERD, with efficacy comparable to standard medications and few side effects. However, these studies are generally small, not widely replicated, and of varying methodological quality.
Overall, while aloe vera is widely used in traditional medicine for acid indigestion, robust scientific validation is lacking. Most supporting information is anecdotal or based on limited clinical data, so its use should be approached cautiously, especially considering potential side effects (such as laxative effects from whole-leaf extracts).
