Tannins, a group of polyphenolic compounds found in many plants, have a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating various skin conditions, including abscesses. Their astringent properties are believed to help "dry out" wounds and reduce inflammation. In ethnobotanical records, preparations containing tannin-rich plants (such as oak bark, witch hazel, or certain teas) have been applied topically to abscesses, ulcers, and other suppurative skin conditions to promote healing and limit infection. The primary mechanism attributed is the ability of tannins to precipitate proteins, thereby forming a protective layer over tissues and reducing exudate. However, while there is robust traditional use, direct scientific studies investigating tannins specifically for the treatment of abscesses are limited. Some in vitro studies suggest tannins possess antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically help prevent secondary infection or limit the spread of bacteria in superficial skin lesions. Yet, there is a lack of controlled clinical trials confirming their efficacy specifically for abscess healing in humans.
