Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tagetes, commonly known as marigold, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in regions such as South America, India, and Africa. Traditional healers have used Tagetes species—especially Tagetes erecta and Tagetes patula—for the treatment of a variety of skin conditions, including wounds, ulcers, and abscesses. The main rationale behind its use is the plant's reputed anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and wound-healing properties, which are attributed to its essential oils and secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and terpenoids. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys frequently mention the topical application of marigold extracts or poultices for managing abscesses and promoting the healing of infected skin lesions.

However, while there are in vitro studies showing antimicrobial activity of Tagetes extracts against certain bacteria, direct scientific validation for its effectiveness specifically in treating abscesses in humans is limited. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or derived from traditional knowledge rather than well-designed clinical trials. Thus, the use of Tagetes for abscesses is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from laboratory research, but lacking robust scientific validation in clinical settings.
