Smartweed (Persicaria hydropiper, formerly Polygonum hydropiper) has a history of traditional use by various cultures, primarily as a topical application for skin conditions, including abscesses, boils, and other inflammatory lesions. Historical herbal texts and ethnobotanical records indicate that Smartweed poultices or washes were sometimes applied to abscesses to purportedly reduce swelling, draw out pus, or promote healing. These uses are largely based on anecdotal reports and traditional herbal medicine practices, particularly in North America and parts of Europe and Asia.

However, there is little to no modern scientific evidence to validate these uses. Few, if any, rigorous clinical studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of Smartweed for the treatment of abscesses. Some laboratory studies have identified mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity in Smartweed extracts, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to abscess treatment. As such, the use of Smartweed for abscesses is supported mainly by traditional use rather than by robust scientific research. Caution is advised, as the safety and effectiveness for this purpose have not been established in controlled trials.
