Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Resins—natural exudates from plants such as frankincense, myrrh, or pine—have a long history of traditional use in the treatment of abscesses, especially in ancient and folk medicine systems. In historical contexts, resins were often applied topically to abscesses or wounds because of their perceived antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, myrrh resin was widely used in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and traditional Chinese medicine for wound care and to promote healing. Frankincense and pine resins were similarly employed as protective dressings and to draw out pus. The rationale for these uses was based more on empirical observation than on controlled scientific studies. Traditional practitioners noted that some resins seemed to reduce swelling, prevent putrefaction, and speed up the healing of suppurative lesions. Modern research has identified some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds in certain resins, but robust clinical evidence for their efficacy in treating abscesses is lacking. The use of "resin (unspecified)" for abscesses, therefore, is primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific validation. While some in vitro studies suggest potential activity against pathogens, evidence from human clinical trials is minimal or absent. Thus, the use of resin for abscesses is supported more by historical precedent than by rigorous scientific data.
