Resins—natural exudates from plants such as frankincense, myrrh, or pine—have a long history of traditional use in the treatment of abscesses, especially in ancient and folk medicine systems. In historical contexts, resins were often applied topically to abscesses or wounds because of their perceived antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
