Marigold, particularly referring to Calendula officinalis, has a long tradition of use in herbal medicine for treating wounds, skin infections, and abscesses. Historical records from European folk medicine, as well as Ayurvedic and Unani systems, document the use of marigold preparations—such as poultices, ointments, and infusions—for promoting wound healing and reducing inflammation in abscesses and other skin eruptions. The primary basis for its use is its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and vulnerary (wound-healing) properties. While some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory constituents in Calendula, such as flavonoids and triterpenoids, clinical evidence for its efficacy specifically in abscess treatment remains limited and mostly anecdotal. Some small clinical trials and case reports suggest benefit in wound healing, but robust, controlled studies on abscesses are lacking. Thus, the use of marigold for abscesses is primarily justified by traditional use, with a modest level of supporting evidence.
